About James Brooks

I am passionate about developing new ways of improving human cognitive performance. I received my PhD in Psychology from Edith Cowan University, WA, in 2015, at the age of 25. My PhD explored the positive effects of video games on improving both divided and sustained attention performance. I have over 6 years of experience as a Human Factors Scientist, in areas of Human-Autonomy Teaming, and Team Training Effectiveness. In these roles areas I was responsible for designing and evaluating user interfaces for a range of systems, including autonomous Command & Control systems and After-Action Review technologies. In 2018, I received the Outstanding Early Career Achievement Award for demonstrating excellence in human-machine interface design and prototyping, experimental design, and data collection, reporting and presentation. In my Human-Autonomy Teaming role, I have designed and conducted experiments using virtual and augmented reality, as well as designing and evaluating interfaces for a single operator to control multiple autonomous unmanned vehicles. In my Training Effectiveness role, I was responsible for developing an after-action tool used to conduct individual and team training research. In addition to these roles, I have also worked as a Senior Operations Analyst, conducting qualitative and thematic analyses to evaluate the operations of high-performance teams at the command and control level.
