Background
About James Bruce
As an academic I am interested in detecting, measuring and regulating chemical responses in complex environments. I do this at a molecular level by designing and synthesizing responsive materials that can interact with their surroundings and signal this interaction. I make extensive use of light as a signalling medium and am interesting in the interactions between light and molecules. My research is interdisciplinary and I value working in cross disciplinary teams applying my chemical techniques to investigate applications from the biomedical to the environmental. As a result I collaborate extensively with industry. My interest in working in cross disciplinary teams has extended outside my research. I set up and launched the Open University's Graduate School and developed its PGR strategy working with colleagues from across Faculties and Professional services. I am now contributing academic leadership to a comprehensive change programme that will enable the University to deliver its vision and strategy.
