Reflecting on my journey, I am reminded of the countless paths others have trodden before me, often following in the footsteps of their forebears. Some embraced family legacies, while others mirrored their parents' endeavors. However, for individuals like myself, there was no predetermined route. Growing up in fragmented families, charting a course meant risking pitfalls. From an early age, I sought to forge my own path, venturing off the beaten track into the wilderness. This narrative forms the foundation of my teachings to my students, emphasizing the importance of carving out their unique trajectories, irrespective of societal norms. I openly share my unconventional background, disclosing that I never completed high school. This revelation sparks curiosity, allowing me to delve into the challenges I faced and how I overcame them. My journey took a significant turn when I retired from the Army a decade ago. During my service, I embraced diverse roles while navigating the responsibilities of fatherhood. Post-retirement, I ventured into entrepreneurship, rekindled lost connections, and eventually married after a twelve-year journey. Undeterred by challenges, I pursued higher education while balancing work and business endeavors. This pursuit led me to a place that captured my heart, shaping the person I am today. Through my story, I encourage my students to chart their own paths, assuring them that authenticity leads to fulfillment. There's immeasurable joy in cherishing loved ones, residing in beloved places, and pursuing work that resonates with the soul.
