About James Curtiss

Jim Curtiss has 36 years of experience in commercial nuclear power issues, both in the private and public sectors. He is currently advising a number of companies on energy issues. From 1993 to 2008, Jim was a partner in the law firm of Winston & Strawn LLP, where he chaired the Energy Group and was a member of the firm's Hiring Committee. In 1988, President Reagan appointed Jim a Commissioner of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, where he served until June 1993. Before Jim's service on the NRC, he was Counsel to the Subcommittee on Nuclear Regulation of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works. In that capacity, Jim was directly involved in the drafting of the Nuclear Waste Policy acts of 1982 and 1987, as well as the Low Level Radioactive Waste Policy Act of 1985 and the Price Anderson reauthorization of 1987. Jim is a member of the boards of Cameco Corporation and BGE. He serves as an adviser to the Generation Oversight Committee of Exelon Corporation. He is also a member of the Board of the Center for Nuclear Technology Awareness. He was previously a member of the Nuclear Oversight Board for Southern California Edison, as well as the INPO Advisory Council. Jim is a member of the bar of the District of Columbia Court of Appeals and the United States Supreme Court. He received a bachelor's degree in English and Political Science from the University of Nebraska in 1976 and a J.D, with distinction, from the University of Nebraska Law School in 1979, where he was a member of the Law Review. Jim is a frequent speaker at nuclear industry conferences. He has spoken on corporate governance issues at the MIT Reactor Technology Course for Utility Executives and the Goizueta Directors Institute. He has also served on numerous committees of the National Research Council of the National Academy of Sciences.
