About James Day

As a research associate at the Quantum Matter Institute, I have a passion for supporting groups that perform cutting-edge experiments in scanning tunnelling microscopy and microwave electrodynamics. With extensive experience in cryogens and ultrahigh vacuum, I have developed a keen eye for detail and a commitment to achieving the highest standards in all of my work. In addition to my technical skills, I am also deeply engaged in physics education research, with a focus on understanding how students learn in first-year labs. With a strong background in statistics and data analysis, I am adept at uncovering insights and identifying opportunities for improvement. I am a strong advocate for clear communication and data visualization, and I believe that effective outreach is critical to advancing the public's understanding of science. As an active member of the scientific community, I am deeply committed to equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) initiatives, and I work hard to ensure that everyone has a seat at the table. One of my most exciting projects is coordinating a research initiative that brings together artists and scientists to explore new and innovative ways of understanding the world around us. Through this initiative, we are able to tap into the power of interdisciplinary collaboration and create work that is both beautiful and scientifically rigorous. When I'm not in the lab, you can find me staying active and exploring the great outdoors. Whether I'm hiking, biking, or running, I believe that physical activity is a key component of a healthy and balanced life.
