About James Edgar

Experienced Software Engineer | Graphics Tools | PhD in Digital CommunicationsI’m a software engineer with over 25 years of commercial experience across mobile, desktop and embedded systems. My early career focused on low-level development—device drivers, OS porting and bring-up on new mobile hardware—working closely with handset manufacturers and silicon vendors. From 2009, I worked on GPU drivers and related software, including porting to new platforms, customisation for industry partners, and prototyping around emerging graphics and compute standards. Since 2017, my focus has been on building desktop tools that assist graphics developers in analysing and optimising performance across a wide range of mobile and embedded applications, with a strong emphasis on Android games. My background includes over a decade in academia beginning with a BEng and MSc from Warwick University, followed by a PhD in Digital Communications at Lancaster University. My PhD research was undertaken part-time while I was employed as a RA, with sponsorship from DERA.Based in South Manchester, I bring a depth of engineering experience, a strong analytical mindset, and a long-standing interest in system-level and performance-focused software.
