About James Fowler

Hi! I am a Research Fellow at The University of Queensland and University of Southern Queensland. My work focuses on using mixed-methodologies and community-based participatory research to address the needs of priority groups in the context of mental, sexual, and physical health. I have a particular focus on the design, evaluation, and implementation of health interventions as well as improving the accessibility of health services. I am a proud Queer and neurodivergent person and much of my work focuses on the experiences of LGBTQIA+ individuals. Current projects I lead or support include- Evaluation and development of a digital, self-guided Acceptance and Commitment Therapy program for LGBTQIA+ individuals-The development an affirming model of care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander LGBTQIASGBB+ peoples accessing Aboriginal Medical Services-Evaluation of a peer-led psychosocial support program for people with innate variations of sex characteristics-Supporting access to gender affirming hormone therapy-Development of protocols for affirming psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy with LGBTQIA+ individuals-AroUQ: Exploring the needs and wellbeing of aromantic communities -Barriers and facilitators to accessing Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis for young Queenslanders I am a skilled educator and have experience course-coordinating and lecturing undergraduate psychology and public health subjects. In recognition of my work supporting students I was appointed an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy in 2024. I am currently a member of the Queensland Government’s advisory panel on LGBTQIA+ issues and helping to develop Queensland’s LGBTQIA+ strategy. Prior to this role, I worked for Lady Gaga on her Born This Way Foundation Youth Advisory Board. In 2022 I was awarded the UQ Ally Award in recognition of my services in making a safer university for LGBTQIA+ students. I have 21 peer-reviewed publications (110 citations, h-index 5), presented widely at national and international conferences / meetings, and have a book chapter in press. My work has been cited in The New York Times and by the BBC. I am excited to collaborate with folk all around the world on a range of topics.
