Background
About James Garringer
While the first network transmission happened about a year and a half before I was born, I’ve always felt like I was born to work on networks. Throughout my career, I’ve led or contributed to projects focused on moving data from one device to another—from the early days of serial and dial-in connectivity to token ring, Ethernet hubs, and today’s Gigabit and 10-Gigabit switched networks. I’ve been hands-on with early BreezeCom and 3Com Wi-Fi in the late ’90s and early and have worked with nearly every major maker of modern Wi-Fi networking equipment since then. But it’s not just the history of the gear I’ve worked with that matters. What’s truly important is understanding how technology builds on past innovations—and staying alert for the next breakthrough. My goal is to identify when those improvements should be implemented in devices and network hardware to make a meaningful impact. At Apple, I work with enterprise, government, education, and healthcare customers to deploy Apple products in diverse networking environments. As a Certified Wireless Network Expert (CWNE), I bring expertise in scaling and troubleshooting networks, using tools like Wireshark to resolve complex challenges. I evangelize innovative networking features and best practices, helping customers maximize the value of their Apple solutions. Through this work, I’ve contributed over the past decade to guiding Apple’s hardware and software teams in shaping future technologies. Teaching has been a constant throughout my career, and I truly enjoy sharing my knowledge on networking topics. I’m proud to have authored two video courses for Pearson Education with my Cisco co-author, Jérôme Henry. These courses—Wireshark for Wireless LANs and Wireshark Fundamentals—are part of Pearson’s LiveLessons series. Speaking about networking topics like Wi-Fi design, troubleshooting, and protocol analysis is another passion of mine. I’ve been honored to speak many times at conferences such as HPE Aruba Networking’s Atmosphere, Penn State Mac Admins, the Pennsylvania Educational Technology Expo and Conference (PETE & C), Brainstorm, and many other technology events across the United States. I’ve also enjoyed working on advisory boards and committees, such as the CWNE Board of Advisors, and find this work to align nicely with my love of the technologies they support. My life’s work has included a mix of subject matter expertise in network troubleshooting, proven team leadership, public speaking and solution design. I am very thankful for the opportunity to continue doing this work.
