Background
About James Greer
Aviation has been more than a career for me—it’s a passion that began in childhood, spending summer days at the Airport Overlook photographing planes as they ascended into the sky. I still remember the excitement I felt witnessing the precision and coordination it took to keep operations running smoothly. This fascination shaped my ambition, and at 18, I transitioned from observer to participant by joining the industry as a ramp agent for an airline contractor servicing Delta Air Lines aircraft. After seven months in that role, I moved on to American Airlines, where I spent a year further developing my skills and understanding of airline operations while working on the ramp. Over time, my experience led me to an exciting opportunity in the Hub Control Center, where I became, to my knowledge, the youngest employee in the airline to take on this role. As a Control Center Coordinator, I focus on gate planning, collaborating with multiple departments to ensure flights depart on time and passengers receive the best experience possible. I work closely with managers and colleagues, both locally and in the Integrated Operations Center (IOC), headquarters, and other airports making real-time decisions that directly impact the smoothness and efficiency of our operations. In the Control Center environment, I’ve contributed to process improvements by helping to optimize the technology we use. Leveraging my experience in IT, I’ve identified ways to streamline operations, automate tasks, and enhance communication between departments. I created Hubsafe, a new safety management system that improve awareness of aircraft and airport operational issues, which has helped decrease event trends in CLT. These passion projects have led to smoother daily operations, more informed decision making and reduced delays. Looking ahead, I’m excited to continue growing in the industry. I’m currently pursuing my FAA dispatch certification, which will allow me to play a larger role in airline-wide operations. This certification will deepen my understanding of how various elements of an airline work together, enabling me to make greater contributions to American Airlines. Outside of work, my passion for aviation extends to my personal interests. Photography has always been a creative outlet for me, and I often use it to capture specific events and special moments within the company. Additionally, I’m constantly exploring ways to integrate my tech skills into everyday processes, finding efficiencies and innovations in both my work and hobbies.
