About James Klassen

I am an avid sailor. As a Technical Advisor for the RCABC, my work pulls together my passions for and commitments to excellence, innovation, beauty, collaboration, good design and fabulous places to work, live and play. And I love to teach, weaving lessons from sailing into the world of good roof design and construction. Coupling those with my experience and training in Insurance and Risk Management, Conflict Resolution and negotiation, Construction, Occupational Health & Safety, and Facilities Management, I'm working to build a strong organization that will influence the future designs of the buildings and spaces we enjoy. I currently serve as the lead technical writer for the Roofing Practices Manual (RPM), our online compendium of roofing Best Practices and standards for constructing a RoofStar-guaranteed Waterproofing or Water-shedding System. I also sit on the CSA-A123 Technical Committee as a voting member, and on various CSA sub-committees (task groups) responsible for the maintenance and improvement of various CSA roofing standards. I bring to my CSA commitments a desire to serve, a recognition that standards best serve Canadians when they are clear and well-crafted, and a strong commitment to take care of others. Building Standards ensure that built structures meet the minimum requirements for public safety, comfort and accessibility. They ensure that people are taken care of and are not left vulnerable by unbridled market forces. I like that. My CSA work provides one window through which I can contribute to the development of thoughtful, robust construction standards that put the welfare of Canadian citizens first. Finally, I am a keen proponent of green roofs and led the development of the RCABC's Standard for Vegetated Roofs, a foundational piece of the RoofStar Guarantee for Vegetated Roofs. At the RCABC, we believe that well-conceived and constructed roofs are the product of a proven blend of Quality Control and Quality Assurance: a membership committed to excellence; objective, rational standards; accepted materials backed by their manufacturers; trained and technically proficient installers; and professional independent field reviews.
