About James Liu

Early in my career I had the privilege to work at co-op and volunteer jobs both locally and internationally, that connected me with colleagues of diverse professional and cultural backgrounds beyond computer science. After graduating, I worked as a software developer in Toronto, but the international work experience was engraved in my subconscious so much so that after 2 years I had a longing to work internationally again. A reinsurance opportunity in Bermuda happened to come across around that time. Without any knowledge of the industry and counting only on my analytics skills being transferable, I challenged myself and pursued it. That job of a catastrophe (cat) risk analyst opened me up to a niche industry with very interesting and unique problems to solve, and also took me to Switzerland and the US for more than a decade. Life is a circle, and now I have returned to Toronto. Aside from (re)insurance, I’m also keen on exploring opportunities more generally in data analysis/science that have seen huge and exciting advances in recent years. Experience: • a senior full-stack and cloud infrastructure developer • a seasoned cat modeler/risk analyst, practicing probabilistic models, analyzing large data set, and applying risk metrics in reinsurance treaty pricing, and portfolio risk management & reporting. • Strong foundations in computer and mathematical science - particularly, databases, data analytics, and artificial intelligence. • Extensive experience collaborating with actuaries and natural scientists. • Lead liaison between software developers and analytics teams in systems development. • International work experience in 7 countries over 4 continents, including Zurich and Bermuda.
