Background

About James Mapstone

My journey in sport, crime prevention and criminal justice began at HMP & YOI Ashfield, where I was inspired to establish my first social enterprise in 2008. What started as a mission to create opportunities for vulnerable young people with complex needs grew into a nationally and internationally recognised organisation, delivering high-impact and award winning programmes across sport, criminal justice and post-16 education and training sectors. In 2019, I transitioned our work into the Alliance of Sport, a charity now operating across the UK and Southeast Asia and dedicated to leveraging sport and physical activity to drive systemic change. As CEO, I lead on development, strategic partnerships and global operations, working collaboratively to secure over £8 million, deliver flagship initiatives, conduct pioneering research and influence national and international policy, practice and investment. I serve as the Secretariat for the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Sport and Physical Activity in the Criminal Justice System and as a member of the HMPPS Effective Practice Sports Panel, shaping the future of sport’s role in crime prevention, rehabilitation and criminal justice reform. Beyond my core role, I actively contribute to the sector. I’m a Trustee at Bristol Sport Foundation, Chairman of Chipping Sodbury Town FC and I'm proud to support organisations such as UK Coaching, the Sport for Development Coalition, Beyond Sport, the Rugby Premiership, Sport Industry Group, the Thailand Institute of Justice and the UN Office on Drugs and Crime. I am passionate about building movements that transform lives through physical activity and sport, bridging policy and practice and ensuring that investment delivers measurable impact - creating safer and more resilient individual’s and communities around the world. I’m always open to connecting with like-minded leaders committed to driving meaningful change.#Leadership #SystemsChange #SportForABetterWorld #SportForDevelopmentandPeace #CriminalJustice #SaferCommunities #CollectiveImpact #TogetherWeDid #LevellingThePlayingField #GetWellStayWell #SoutheastAsiaSportAndYouthCrimePrevention
