About James Newbury

James is the Member for Brighton, in the Victorian Parliament, representing Brighton, Brighton East, Elwood, Hampton and Hampton East. He was first elected to represent his community in 2018 and was then re-elected in 2022.James is a member of Shadow Cabinet, currently holding the roles of Shadow portfolios of Attorney General, Anti-Corruption, and Equality. He has previously held the Treasury and Planning portfolios.Before entering Parliament, James worked in the private sector as a Group Company Secretary in the financial services industry. He worked for ARCA, the peak body for organisations involved in the disclosure and exchange of credit reporting information.For over a decade, James worked in the public sector, at the highest levels of both State and Federal Government. In that time he held senior leadership positions managing two hung Parliaments (State and Federal) and had oversight of the machinery of a State Government. James has been admitted to the legal profession as an Australia Lawyer. He holds a post graduate level law degree, a Juris Doctor (JD), and a Masters Degree in Business Law (MBusLaw).James and his wife Suzanne live in Brighton, Victoria with their two young daughters.
