About James Owens

I have experience in the med. and scientific fields that started at a small Veterinarian Hosp. and led to working as a Microbio. Intern at Hardy Dx and an EMT treating patients. I learned valuable communication skills when instructing students in swimming and had an amazing time that I treasure. I established productive, meaningful relationships with my students and their families. Throughout this journey I have pursued my passion for the biological sciences and the human body by getting an education at Fullerton College (A.A. Chemistry) that culminated in me transferring to Cal Poly SLO and getting my B.S. in, Cell and Molecular Bio. At Cal Poly, I met more amazing people and conducted research with Dr. Lars Tomanek studying the effects of heat stress on proteins of the Mytilus Edulis or common blue mussel. I presented a poster at SICB, a scientific conference, with novel research involving the movement speed of fluorescent microscopic beads through the gills of mussels by using a computer program called Trackmate. I am proficient in many computer software programs, including the Office suite, through professional and educational work on scientific reports/figures/graphs. My lab experience is extensive from utilizing basic lab equipment like: pipette, micropipette, and lab glassware, to more sophisticated equipment like: spectrophotometers (UV, Mass, and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance), PCR, gel electrophoresis, western blot, and fluorescent microscopes. I'm experienced with cell biology/chemistry/microbiological techniques like streaking plates, inoculating different media with many different types of organisms, plasmid/gene insertion, DNA/RNA extraction, protein isolation, preparing solutions with a pH, volume, and concentration. Throughout this journey I have never forgotten my passion for scientific knowledge. I look forward to pursuing my passion with you in the future whether that be educational or work-related.
