About James Shawe

James is a Legal Director at Eversheds Sutherland specialising in the grid, regulatory and real estate elements of site development, sale, acquisition, power purchase and financing of renewable energy and infrastructure projects. James has advised developers, funders and investors of all major clean energy technologies including wind (onshore and offshore), solar (ground based and commercial and residential rooftop), wave and tidal, biomass, anaerobic digestion, battery storage as well as related projects including data centre, infrastructure and interconnector schemes. His experience includes- advising generators and offtakers with respect to power purchase strategies involving a range of generation technologies/volumes- advising generation and demand users of grid infrastructure at the distribution and transmission level concerning grid connection arrangements, including the recent TMO4+ process run by NESO- advising hydrogen offtakers in the context of the Hydrogen Allocation Rounds- negotiations on behalf of developers and investors opposite The Crown Estate concerning the extensions to Round 3 offshore wind projects- advising stakeholders concerning participation in The Crown Estate’s Round 4 offshore wind leasing round- providing real estate advice and a market first approach to real estate due diligence with respect to the sale of shares in the 860 megawatt Triton Knoll offshore wind farm to Japanese investors as well as simultaneously advising on a linked £1.75 billion financing of the same wind farm involving a consortium of global banks including Santander, Lloyds, BNP Paribas, MUFG Bank and Bayerische Landesbank- advising developers of major interconnector projects concerning the acquisition of offshore and onshore rights from The Crown Estate and other landowners. Prior to joining Eversheds Sutherland, James was a senior legal adviser in the Commercial Networks Team at the Office of Gas and Electricity Markets (Ofgem), with a particular focus on the regulatory and funding aspects of nuclear, CCUS (carbon capture usage and storage) and offshore transmission technologies.
