About James Tomasson

After spending close to two decades in the post-secondary education sector, both in Calgary and abroad, I have developed significant expertise in- career development - training and development - academic administration - curriculum design - teaching and facilitation - qualitative research My academic journey began while completing my sociology doctorate in Lancaster, England. Despite never intending to pursue further education, a snowboard accident prompted me to move to England with the goal of becoming a sociology professor. Through teaching, I discovered that I had a knack for remembering the names of hundreds of students, build a genuine rapport with them, and explaining complex sociology concepts with ease. Although I loved teaching, I eventually realized that researching and writing journal articles on social theory didn't align with my true passion for inspiring, encouraging, and motivating young people face-to-face. This led me to transition into education administration, training and development, and curriculum design. Currently, I am focusing on program management and career advising at Haskayne, where I help MBA students identify their skills and navigate the complex job market. My favorite part of the job is teaching students the art of networking, an essential skill when accessing the hidden job market. Outside of work, you'll find me at a local disc golf course, snowboarding at Lake Louise, or planning my next bike tour. I'm always keen to collaborate with like-minded individuals in the post-secondary education and career development space.
