Background
About James Tuffin
With over 25 years of civil engineering experience and now over 15 years’ experience within a planning role on tenders and live contracts, James now leads as Head of Planning for Operations for Kier Infrastructure Projects. James recognises that whilst bar chart programmes are an adequate reporting tool, they can be a poor communication tool, so James produces visual planning aids such as sequence sketches, block diagrams or time chainage charts to provide as much clarity and “buy in” from the team as is necessary. Having carried out operational roles, he uses this experience to become a fully integrated member of the operational team, with a quick keen eye on the commercial aspects of the project. James worked for Carillion, formerly Mowlem, for over 12 years, progressing from site engineer to sub-agent. In 2007, he was asked to work on tenders producing programmes for tender submissions and was consequently asked to move into a full-time planning role. Quickly progressing from planner, senior planner to principal planner for Carillion, James joined Balfour Beatty and was promoted to planning manager. During this time, he was a key member of the teams successfully delivering, amongst other schemes, the A11 Fiveways to Thetford scheme and Norwich Northern Distributor Road, ahead of time and under budget and was nominated as employee of the year in 2016. James joined Kier Major Projects in 2018 working on the A13 Widening scheme and has been contributing to improving Major Project’s reporting processes, receiving a nomination for the Pride of Kier awards 2021 within the Creative Solution category, recognising his development of a performance management process. As Head of Planning, James' role has expanded to encompass Kier Infrastructure Projects operational planning family. This required drafting and roll-out of a new contract planning standard, including production of a suite of best practice template forms and development of a short-term performance process, including cost control. Recruitment support for new projects and future resilience, provision of internal training, as well as mentoring are other key tasks being performed. · High level of experience in NEC ECC · High level of experience and proven delivery of projects with complex constraints · Tender and contract planning · Experienced in Primavera P6 & ASTA Powerproject · SMSTS and CSCS Site Manager
