Background
About Jan Doense
During his International Law Studies at the University of Amsterdam, Jan Doense started his career in film as a critic and a journalist, and founded the Imagine: Amsterdam Fantastic Film Festival, which he ran until 2008. Over the years Jan organized many other film related events, including the notorious Night of Bad Taste and the Halloween Horror Show, earning him the nickname “Mr. Horror”. In the mean time Jan produced and directed several short films and three feature length films. In 2009 he founded his production company House of Netherhorror, where he developed four feature length film projects with financial support from the Netherlands Film Fund. The first of these – THE POOL – was shot in 2013 and released in 2014 to critical acclaim. When Jan left the Imagine festival in 2008 he was made a knight in the Order of Orange Nassau based on his contributions to the Dutch film sector. In November 2018 Jan was appointed festival director at Film by the Sea in Vlissingen, the fourth film festival of the Netherlands.
