About Jan Hamers

Prof. dr. J.P.H.(Jan) Hamers, PhD, is CEO of MeanderGroep Zuid-Limburg and Professor of Care of Older People at Maastricht University in the Netherlands. He also is visiting professor at University of Leeds in the UK. He is founder of the Living Lab in Ageing and Long-Term Care (Academische Werkplaats Ouderenzorg Limburg; which is a sustainable and successful formal collaboration between research, teaching and care organizations providing long-term care (covering about clients and employees). Joint appointments and interdisciplinarity are the core concepts of the Living Lab in Ageing and Long-Term Care, which has been identified as an inspirational practice for engagement, creating impact and conducting citizen science, and has being copied in the Netherlands and abroad (e.g, UK, Germany, Austria and Belgium). Hamers and his research group conduct unique research on the interface of different disciplines such as nursing science, gerontology, health sciences, medicine, data-science, technology and service science. Teamscience and collaboration are the backbone of all almost his research activities which result in both a strong scientific and societal impact. The mission of Hamers and his group is to contribute via scientific research to better quality of life of older persons, quality of care and quality of work of professional caregivers in long-term care. Hamers has been very successful in acquiring major research grants (more than including EU-FP7 and EU-Horizon2020), and in managing and completing major projects. He and his group have written numerous papers in scientific journals, professional journals, books et cetera, and have received several awards (e.g, societal impact awards, awards for best dissertations, valorization award). He is frequently invited as key note speaker at international meetings and scientific conferences,(guest) editor and reviewer for scientific journals and reviewer of major international research funding agencies and universities. Under his leadership, three of his former PhD students moved up to the level of professor, while others received different core positions in and outside academia; one of his PhD students received the distinction cum laude, and another was selected as a member of the Dutch Young Academy. Hamers has also been active as a member and chairman in executive/supervisory boards of health care organizations, served in many (international) leadership positions, and frequently acts as an advisor for the Dutch government and their advisory boards.
