About Jan Maddern

I have spent many years working with charities and local good causes, from setting up and running charities on behalf of Trustees, to fundraising, event organising, producing marketing materials using inDesign and social media channels. In addition, I am a Trustee of a village hall and a community centre. As the first Independent Councillor ever to be elected in Dacorum Borough Council, and the first since 1993 in Hertfordshire County Council, I am truly committed to community rather than party politics and am well known in the local area for getting things done. I am also well known for not giving in to bullies, and will always stand up for what I believe to be right! In 2019 I decided to follow a lifelong dream and joined Birkbeck, University of London, to study a Foundation degree in Human Geography. Having left school at 16 this is a huge step, but a challenge I am really enjoying! I focus my module options on cities, urban inequality, regeneration/gentrification. My dissertation subject is based around a mining village in Kent, and how the village coped with the aftermath of the demise of the coal field. I have been campaigning since 2001 to protect hospital services in nor near Hemel Hempstead, as I believe that, as the biggest town in Hertfordshire, we deserve a decent hospital service in the viscinity. I set up, and run a school uniform shop at the fantastic Lockers Park, Hemel Hempstead, where I also volunteer as a Group Scout Leader, running Scouts and overseeing Beavers and Cubs.
