Intrigued by factory automation” That’s what I am. I’m not sure where it came from? Probably because I hate doing repetitive things? Pessimists say factory automation takes jobs away. I say automation makes people happier. It makes the world a better place. People get numb by spending a full shift repeating the same manual task over and over again. Make them responsible for an automated production line and they will feel empowered, responsible and happier. Daily, I see engineers working hard, doing whatever it takes to get machines up and running, taking great pride and satisfaction. I met with business owners who talked about their brand-new automated production line and how it kept their company alive. All of us are happy to drive our car, use our smartphone, enjoy good food and take medication when needed. Without factory automation, all of this would be for the happy few. Factory Automation makes us happier. It makes the world a better place but we’re not there yet. We’re just getting started. A new wave of automation is starting in the world of logistics. “Lights-out warehouses” are the ultimate goal. While protesters are coming on the street to demand firm actions against climate change, scientist are working around the clock to develop new ways to generate renewable energy, develop batteries to put in our electrical cars, we will all have within less than 10 years. Mass production of these new developed products will need automated production lines. About me: For more than 30 years I’ve been working in the wonderful world of factory automation. Machine Vision has been my main focus and got me involved into many automation projects across the world and into many industries. “Eaten bread is soon forgotten” What’s next?
