I believe good Safety Management does not happen by itself. I want to help Managers to have a positive impact on their organisation's safety performance. Good safety performance is an integral part of good operational performance. How? I implemented and operated 2 SMS systems for 7 years, consulted globally in aviation safety for 15 years and manufacturing and heavy industry for the last 8 years with Safemap. During that time I have experienced that the most difficult factors to improve SMS and safety management are usually not technical in nature, rather social. Not just systems and databases but people. This means you need to learn how to get things done through working with other people. I have attended many SMS and Safety training courses by the biggest institutions, but rarely was this social aspect of safety management addressed. As a technical person we are usually not trained or equipped with the necessary tools to get the best out of people. The good news that it is a learnable skill! Along the way I can help to address the elephant in the boardroom; When a Safety Management System does not work, it can lead to conflicts within the management team, lack of cooperation and a perception that it is a waste of everyone's time. Worst case scenario; the SMS & Safety Manager lose credibility and their recommendations do not lead to actions to improve safety! I have consulted and trained organisations world-wide ranging from board room, operational level to frontline coaching side by side workers in very dangerous operational environments. I have managed mid-sized consultant/ coaching teams in Europe and Latin America to deliver cultural change in very complex organizational environments and operational cultures. My understanding of Safety Culture is ever evolving and my toolkit contains knowledge of Human Factors, Human Operational Performance, Safety II, Complex systems theory concepts and mature coaching and training skills to deliver Safety Culture interventions that work and are sustainable.
