About Jan Stap

In my work as an Elastic Stack specialist, I develop and maintain application monitoring and data processing applications for various customers. Work for this and other Elastic Stack projects includes setting up custom Logstash configurations, accessing application API's, implementing Beat and Elastic Agent clients, doing custom data mangling and creating Kibana dashboards. The fun in this work comes from being closely involved with the customer-specific business and included technical challenges, both adding to my knowledge. For a Dutch insurance company, I implemented a message bus ingesting solution, fetching, decoding and enriching messages in real time, with a role-based data access control. This gives the customer great insight into their business. More recently, for a big US insurance company, I participated in developing a Kubernetes (GKE+ECK) based logs ingesting Elasticsearch cluster. Further, I developed an Elastic Agent wrapper for easy software distribution and I implemented Okta-based SSO onto this platform. In my current projects for various customers, I apply and extend that knowledge. My background is in IT discovery, performance monitoring and testing, programming, Internet email services delivery and web applications development. This work has made me familiar with Kubernetes, Docker and with UNIX flavors like Linux, Solaris, HP-UX and AIX and it made me experienced with related open source software and Internet standards in large customer environments. In later work I gained a good Windows experience. To assist in IT discovery, I created and extended a network traffic discovery tool in PowerShell. My current Elastic Stack work deepens both my Elastic Stack, cloud and Linux knowledge. In my spare time, I extend my Linux home server and I maintain and extend a Joomla based portal website and support the group of people maintaining the site content. Singing in a chamber choir and road bicycle racing are other things I am fond of doing. I aim to extend my technical knowledge and experience and thereby keeping my domain knowledge current.
