About Jan Vanaverbeke
I hold a PhD in Biology, and I have 20 year experience with research on marine ecology. I was involved in research projects in the Atlantic deep sea, the Arctic Laptev Sea and the Antarctic Weddell Sea before focusing on the ecology of the North Sea. My research projects cover the entire range between both fundamental ecology and applied science. Recently, I became interested in the science-policy link through my research on Marine Spatial Planning and involvement in policy advising projects within the framework of the implementation of Natura in the marine environment and the Marine Strategy Framework Directive. I am/was coordinator of several national/international scientific projects and acted as Work Package leader in the EU FP7 project MESMA. I developed skills in project and peoples management, project follow up, presentation techniques and scientific writing. Currently I am the coordinator of the Belgian node of the European Marine Biological Resource Centre (EMBRC), a European distributed research centre that aims to provide a strategic delivery mechanism for excellent and large-scale marine science in Europe.
