Background

About Jan White

I have had the honor to help develop the field of wildlife rehabilitation and was very lucky to have been selected by UC Davis Veterinary School to become a veterinarian. I have combined the skills I learned in college (Social Work/Corrections) with these other two interests to make a very interesting career. My community organization efforts (an offspring from Social Work schooling) have included developing two wildlife centers from scratch and helping develop a permanent center in Anchorage, AK following my work at the Exxon-Valdez oil spill in 1989. I have owned two veterinary practices and started one of them from scratch (Sawyer Lake Veterinary Hospital). I like what I do and aim to keep on doing comunity service helping educate people about their animals as well as the many species around them. In 2010, I established the only wildlife rehabilitation center in King County, WA In 2014, Jen Gould, a wildlife veterinary assistant received her wildlife rehabilitator license from the State of WA as well. The center, South Sound Critter Care also assists with abandoned kittens and a variety of other odd animals that have no other place to turn to. By 2013, we had reached our carrying capacity at our current site handling 1750 wild animals and 150 "other animals" from stray peacocks, silver pheasants, to abandoned Sugar Gliders! In 2014, we have cared for 1925 wild animals and about 100 non-wildlife animals. I purchased an acre of land nearby with a cabin for interns this year and we will be building caging at that site for wildlife. We are presently trying to find a permanent home for South Sound Critter Care and it's many programs. In January 2015, South Sound Critter Care hired our first Hospital Manager, NaTasha Magneson, a licensed wildlife rehabilitator as the program continued to grow to the 2nd largest in WA state. On January 2016, we hired our first development officer, Kellian Baker.
