I am currently an Ordinary member of the Competition Appeal Tribunal, hearing and deciding on appeal cases involving competition or economic regulatory issues. My recent public appointments were as Commissioner for the Civil Service Commission with accountability for safeguarding the regulatory requirements, which flow from statute, that recruitment into the Civil Service is made on merit based on fair and open competition. Key responsibilities were chairing recruitment competitions for the most senior level appointments, adjudicating in complaint investigations about recruitment and ethical standards and setting principles for recruitment into the Civil Service. I was also a lay member of the House of Commons, Committee on Standards, with responsibility to understand, apply and regularly review the Code of Conduct and Guide to the Rules which set the standards required of Members of Parliament (MPs), and heard outcomes of investigations carried out by the Parliamentary Commissioner on Standards into complaints against MPs and determined the sanctions to be recommended to the House. My executive career has been predominately with the John Lewis Partnership, a food and non food £11bn retail business, employing Partners, my last position being a main board director with experience of the Risk and Audit, Remuneration and CSR sub committees. As Partners' Counsellor, I was accountable for overseeing the co-ownership governance structure and leading an assurance, engagement, and support function. I have held operational roles across Waitrose and John Lewis and was a member of the Waitrose Operational Board for 6 years and I have successfully delivered two major reorganisation programmes.
