About Jane Douglas

I have had a varied career and have developed wide-ranging skills. I initially trained as an Environmental Health Officer and used my specialism in housing standards to work in a freelance capacity as an expert witness. My interest in environmental and medical matters lead me into feature and news writing and I have worked for many years as a journalist (both in-house and freelance). My first daughter was born profoundly deaf and this drove me to pursue a career in Audiology and Deafness. I currently work as a specialist Audiologist with children and young people with additional complex needs and in a special school. I have a deep personal commitment to improve the overall support for deaf children and young adults and have developed a very unique and unusual career pathway to meet this objective. I am an independent thinker and work very much under my own initiative. I have a broad based skill set (having changed career several times) and have developed a specialist interest in training and teaching in order to inspire and motivate others to understand deafness in its entirety. I tend to challenge over dependency on 'convention' and encourage people to 'think outside the box'. I take a very keen interest in current affairs and am an avid reader.
