About Jane Forsyth

I am a Chartered Surveyor, Senior Lecturer in Property Law and Subject Coordinator at Oxford Brookes University, Associate Tutor at the University College of Estate Management, Consultant at Property Elite, RICS APC Assessor, Fellow of the Institute of Residential Property Management, NRLA Accredited Landlord, co-author of 'Real Estate - the Basics', and a former solicitor specialising in landlord and tenant advice. As a Property Elite consultant I provide mentoring, training and support for aspiring and qualified surveyors. In my principal roles as a Senior Lecturer at Oxford Brookes University School of the Built Environment, and as an Associate Tutor at UCEM, Reading, I am experienced with module leading, face-to-face and online teaching, exam authoring, marking, and moderation, and dissertation supervision. I am involved with a range of modules, including land law, landlord and tenant law, residential property, property development, professional practice and property transactions. Prior to my current roles, I enjoyed an interesting and varied career in the property sector, as a landlord and tenant solicitor, and director of my block management business, which was sold to a national competitor in 2014. Between June 2013 and September 2017 I took on various roles for the Association of Residential Managing Agents (ARMA): Clerk to the Regulatory Panel (I was privileged to work with two former housing ministers in this role); author of weekly Members' Circulars; and Technical Officer. This allowed me to participate in the continued professionalisation of leasehold management through ARMA's new regulatory regime, and to further my interest in the broader issues affecting the sector. I also have experience of valuation, including lease extension and enfranchisement valuation. In 2018 I was very pleased to be invited to contribute towards the Law Commission's preparation for its consultation on the Right to Manage, and to be named as a stakeholder in the Commission's 2019 consultation paper. My book 'Real Estate - the Basics', co-authored with Jan Wilcox FRICS, was published by Routledge in 2022.
