Experience includes developing membrane-based water treatment systems for use on the International Space Station and engineering the process design for a microfiltration/reverse osmosis system to treat secondary wastewater for Honouliuli, Oahu, Hawaii. Several publications and texts on reverse osmosis (RO), membrane technology, and desalination. Selected as a Global Top Scholar by ScholarGPS in 2024. Ranked #11 globally for lifetime contributions in the field of reverse osmosis. Selected by ASME in 2011 to join the ASME Research Committee on Water Management Technology, and elected Vice Chair of the Committee in 2012.Selected as the International Water Conference (IWC) Merit Award winner for 2021.Served as General IWC Conference Chair for 2023, Workshop Chair for IWC in 2021, Conference Technical Chair in 2022. Selected by the IWC Executive Committee to become a member of the IWC Advisory Council in 2011, and elected to the Executive Committee in 2018. Actively participates in IWC by Chairing a membrane or fundamentals session for the past several years. Championed a new session for IWC about the Fundamentals of Wastewater in 2017, including treatment and reuse. Since 2020, I have championed a new conference sessions including Concentrate Management and High-Recovery RO. I also conduct an RO workshop at the IWC, and have done so for the past 14 years. In summary, I have 9 years of experience in basic membrane research and development, including 2 years as a graduate student in the Seawater Lab at UCLA (the same lab in which Loeb and Sourirajan developed the first commercially-viable RO membranes in the late 1950's and early 1960's). I also have 2 years private experience consulting work with membrane-based technologies, and 32 years of experience in detailed process design, engineering, and cost development of water treatment systems for water and wastewater reuse applications for all industries, and am currently involved in this type of work.
