About Jane Pavitt

Director of Research, Knowledge Exchange and Innovation, University for the Creative Arts, UK. I am an experienced HE and research professional with over 20 years expertise in arts, architecture, design and cultural heritage and with senior leadership experience in universities and cultural sector/museums. I have supported universities seeking to increase the quality of research (including grants and practice research) and the range and effectiveness of their research impact, and to support preparation for REF2029. I directed the REF2021 submission for Kingston University, leading on 37 impact case studies and 11 units of assessment across all 4 panels, and resulting in a doubling of QR income for the university. I was a REF2021 full sub-panel assessor for Unit of Assessment 32 (Art, Design, History, Theory). I am a member of AHRC peer review college and a regular reviewer, panellist and chair for AHRC and UKRI. Previous academic roles include Head of School of Creative Industries and Critical Studies (Kingston); Dean of School of Humanities and Head of History of Design (Royal College of Art); and Principal Research Fellow (V&A/University of Brighton). I was Head of Research and Learning for the Zaha Hadid Foundation, a charitable architectural foundation, in its inaugural phase. My research is in the area of modern design and architectural history and I have curated exhibitions including Brand.New (V&A Cold War Modern: Design 1945-70 (V&A 2008) and Postmodernism: Style and Subversion 1970-1990 (V&A 2011) and Superstructures: The New Architecture 1970-1990 (Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts 2017). I have published widely on my research, including accompanying books for exhibitions. I am an experienced public speaker, editorial board member for academic journals, and advisory board member for museums and arts organizations, including currently the Design Museum. I am a Visiting Professor at Kingston University.
