About Janel Smith

Passionate public policy specialist and people leader with a PhD from the London School of Economics. Expertise in policy development, implementation, and evaluation; strategic planning; and conflict resolution and stakeholder relations. In addition to her current role with The Regional Municipality of York, Janel has worked with: • The Government of Ontario, Ministry of Health, Office of the Chief Medical Officer of Health; • The US State Department's Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons in Afghanistan; • Public Safety Canada; • Environment Canada - International and Intergovernmental Affairs; • Statistics Canada; • The Canadian Social Economy Research Partnerships; • Global Affairs Canada; • Transparency International; • The Review of International Studies; and • The G8 and G20 Research Group. Janel has lectured at the London School of Economics, University of Toronto, and University of East London. She has presented numerous papers at conferences, publishes widely, and has served on a number of boards, committees, and associations.
