About Janet Bartlet

With a publishing career that spans over 25 years, in trade publishing houses and as a freelancer, I am now focused on editing and proofreading. I am particularly skilled at making copy more accessible and engaging. Whether it's for an English second-language audience, or vice versa, polishing copy that has been generated by someone who's first language is not English. In my own publishing venture, Word Lab, I’ve edited and published books, communication materials and social media content. In particular, I have edited material such as: • Self-published books • Integrated and annual reports • Corporate rebrandings • Medical research documents and PhDs • Website editing and correcting Prior to 2018, when in formal employment, I worked as a production manager, digital publisher and non-fiction managing editor. I have project-managed over 200 books, from final manuscript to printed publication or ebook, managing the processes of cover and page design, editing, typesetting, proofreading, printing and conversion to ebooks. With the advent of ebooks I compiled the metadata and managed the creation of the ebooks. More recently I’ve gone through a similar metadata process with Onix. My skills include: • Sound editing and proofreading expertise, with an excellent attention to detail and meticulous eye. • Ability to understand the intended target audience and their requirements. • A deep understanding of all publishing processes and the interconnectedness thereof. • Creativity with regard to covers, page design and general look-and-feel. • Excellent author and service provider liaison skills. • Good understanding of technical processes relating to metadata.
