About Janice Devore Littlebear

Janice has spent last 40+ years in the field of education from a tutor to a teacher to a mentor, to an educational consultant, to a Program Manager at the University level, to Director of Education at Alaska Pacific University, and back to consulting with a statewide mentor project in AK. Currently residing in MT and still consulting with educators throughout United States. Through this journey she has collaborated every step of the way-naturally rising to the position of Educational Leader. Cultural issues became a passion of study and delivery within her classroom, as she taught a normal of eight different language speakers any given year-grade levels 3rd through middle school. For five years she worked with Education Northwest, Portland, OR, as a Senior Program Advisor in the field of literacy and professional development. In her third and final year at APU August-May 2020 Janice served as Director and Faculty of a CO-OP K-8 teacher certification program for graduate students seeking a K-8 teacher certification at Alaska Pacific University. From 2012-2024 Janice worked for the University of Alaska in collaboration with fellow mentors and researchers, overseeing mentors working with new and experienced teachers while looking for the best models for embedding Cultural Standards into all levels of teaching, curriculum and ultimately into the practice of all educators working with children. In spring 2018, Janice earned her philosophy doctorate in Education and Cultural Studies. Up until October 2024 she served as Principal Investigator and Project Director of two EIR grants one which expands mentoring into her new state of residence, MT. She retired from the University in fall of 2024. Co-Editor of Rural School Leadership, Lessons from Alaska, released fall 2024, today Dr. Littlebear continues to consult, contribute to books, and discuss anything culture alongside best practices in education from her home in Billings, MT.
