About Janie Bickersteth
My life long interests have been creating things and caring for the environment.These two threads have woven together to create a dynamic career. During child rearing years, I focused on my art, whilst undertaking voluntary projects to raise awareness on climate breakdown - in 2008 I set up a 'climate action' group in Durham, collaborating with the University, the Council and the Church. We led campaigns on banning single use plastic, installing energy efficient light bulbs and we encouraged 'slow food'- the first two now embedded in our lifestyles, but the third - a European movement away from the fast food culture - has remained an anathema in this country, as we've rushed to consume increasing amounts of ultra processed food. Since 2013, my focus has been on our broken food system; a system which has led to environmental degradation and a dramatic decline in the nation's health. I am playing a small part in what I hope will amount to a shift in the way we farm and feed ourselves.
