About Janis Cheadle

With a bachelors degree in commerce and a post graduate LLB degree (obtained summa cum laude), Janis Cheadle served her articles at Edward Nathan Sonnenberg and Knowles Husain Lindsay during which time she gained technical skills in both commercial drafting and dispute resolution. Moving to TEAL Mining, Janis obtained exposure to the operating complexities in Africa and was part of the core team that effected the dual de-listing of the company from both the Toronto and Johannesburg stock exchanges. While at Swiss Re, Janis quickly developed core competencies in the Corporate Governance space and navigated the business through legal and corporate complexities when the company moved its short-term insurance portfolio off-shore and relocated its Johannesburg operations. In her more than 7 years at Massmart, Janis has become an expert at partnering with the business to connect commercial puzzle pieces in a focused and agile way with the goal of increasing the legal and commercial value proposition. Janis was the key legal support in the Massmart-Walmart acquisition and was a member of the core deal team which received a Citation for Excellence. Janis has also built the Massmart Legal team from a single attorney to a team of four which she now manages to drive legal value add within the head office and operational space, including sub-Saharan Africa. Janis manages the corporate governance requirements of the Group and is the Company Secretary for all of Massmart's subsidiary companies, and the Assistant Company Secretary to the listed company. Janis views leadership as a core competency which she continues to develop and explore.
