About Janis Smith

I began my career in scientific and clinical research. I spent 4 years researching maternal-fetal immunology and infectious diseases. The major focus of our work was T-cell immunology and HIV in pregnancy. From here I moved to clinical drug trials with the goal of obtaining FDA approval on new drug applications. After 9 years in research, I left this line of work to pursue another passion: the maritime industry. I worked for two years in the Caribbean on a private charter yacht. From there, I returned to California in pursuit of my 100-ton captain’s license. I operated passenger/supply boats for numerous construction and maritime contracts. The largest of these contracts was lead crew boat operator for the skyway section of the new bay bridge. Amazingly, many skills transferred across such diverse industries: supervisory skills, problem-solving and project management, excellent people, communication and documentation skills, the ability and the desire to excel both independently and in conjunction with a team of co-workers, and the ability to work comfortably with computers and evolving technologies. In early 2009, I suffered an accident. The experience removed me from the work force for 2 years and gave me time to re-think my goals. Following 2 years of hard work and a 100% recovery, I find myself eager to rebuild my career.
