As a writer and editor, I was fortunate enough to work in the NBCNews.com newsroom at the assignment desk under senior editors Hasani Gittens and Tim Perone. I learned a great deal about how to pitch and write stories, read newswire, find and interview sources, and importantly, what it takes to be an editor while working under pressure. Hasani and Tim were supportive, helpful, and genuinely invested in my success. I observed, assisted, and interacted with them while they worked on stories both large and small. As a producer for NY1’s Live at Noon Show working under producers Peter Malavenda and Kayla Shults, not only did I write stories and teases, but I was also responsible for filming segments, creating graphics, arranging the news rundown, editing packages, and working in the control room during the show. As a young child, I was always interested in performing and performing arts. I enjoyed reading plays, attending musicals, as well as acting and performing myself. I carried this passion with me throughout high school and my undergrad, graduating as the president of the performing arts club at Molloy College. My love for writing developed concurrently, and as a kid growing up during/post September 11th, so did my fascination with the news media and how stories are told. I believe these experiences have made me a better journalist. Being an actor has taught me an alternative way of thinking, how to step into another person’s shoes, but above all else, it has taught me empathy. It is a journalist’s job to be unbiased, but being able to truly understand what I am writing, give a voice to the voiceless, and the ability to put humanity and relatability into my stories is what will set me apart from the rest. Aside from my writing, reporting, and editing skills, I know that my full dedication to what I am working on is what will land me a job. I have been published a great deal of times and I know that number will continue to rise. I believe that there is no story too small and no person too insignificant to feature. I have worked with incredible writers, reporters, and editors and I have talked to many inspiring people, but I know I’ve only just scratched the surface.
