At one time. I figured I was going to be a Boston Red Sox staff member for the rest of my career. But there was always something else eating at my insides every time I would enter Fenway Park. A nagging feeling that I was meant to do something else. And after a lot of conversations and thought, I fell in love with the idea of returning to the classroom as a teacher. However, though there was a love in my head, I wouldn't know what being a high school history teacher really was until I had the unique and invaluable experience of teaching for the past two and a half months at Bellingham High School as a long-term history sub. While I was in the position I had complete autonomy and trust from my department to be a teacher. With the guidance of a department that was behind me every step of the way, I was able to successfully fulfill my role as a history teacher. I learned how to create, manage and execute a lesson plan built with the assistance of other teachers, but ultimately of my own abilities and methods that made what I believe was an incredibly positive learning environment not just for the students but for myself. I learned to create tests, essay assignments, and homework assignments that kept pace with the material being covered whether it was the Constitutional Congress or the beginnings of Naziism. I can adapt on the fly, from one class period to the next, going from different topics and different grades with great ease and comfort. And I have excellent knowledge of essential technological learning programs such as Google Classroom Two and a half months does not nearly begin to truly unwrap all of what being a history teacher is, but working with so many different kids from so many different backgrounds, learning styles, and abilities I really got that spark of excitement for teaching history, that quite honestly I didn't know one hundred percent I would have when I began. There is no doubt I still have a lot to learn about the depths of what teaching is, but I'm a fast learner, and what I don't know I purposefully go out of my way to learn. I make mistakes, but I learn quickly from those, and with that have quickly developed the know-how to adapt and change according to what I've observed and most importantly from what those around me have taught me. I take suggestions and criticism not as negatives but as positive challenges that I yearn to accept and conquer.
