About Jasmine Manango

I am a writer for The Ubyssey, UBC's student newspaper, and have written 30+ articles for their news, culture, science, features, blog, and opinion sections as well as their annual magazine. As a staff writer, I have been able to hone my interview, creative nonfiction writing, and research skills. My academic background as a former Engineering and English Literature student has allowed me to develop a unique approach to my current studies as a Social Justice student. The critical reading and critical writing skills I strengthened thanks to the dozens of research papers I've been assigned over the past several years enabled me to create my own interdisciplinary research project which I presented at UBC's annual undergraduate research conference. My literature review about the transnational struggles of Overseas Filipino Workers earned me second place among in-person poster presentations. I am particularly interested in the Filipino-Canadian diaspora, critical disability studies and memoir-writing. In the future, I plan to apply to grad school and further explore this topic in a way that is both critical and creative, interdisciplinary and intersectional.
