About Jasnea Sarma

I am an ethnographer, researcher, editor, and educator from Assam (Northeast India). I am currently based in Zurich, Switzerland as a senior researcher & lecturer in Human Geography at the University Of Zurich (UZH). At UZH, I convene the masters in Political Geography and broadly teach political and socio-cultural geographies with a focus on urban and border studies as well as feminist and de/postcolonial methods. I welcome graduate students interested in researching themes of borderlands, citizenship, migration, and digital political geographies to work with me. My research and publications are on Asia's political geographies and transnational spaces, particularly on borderlands, environmental violence, border regimes, migration, resource frontiers, and extractive spaces which builds on 12+ years of regional, linguistic, and fieldwork experience in Myanmar/Burma, India, and China. Apart from research and teaching, I am an editor of Geopolitics (Taylor & Francis) and part of the editorial collective at the Oxford Tea Circle (for Myanmar/Burma studies). I am also a non-resident research fellow at the Institute of South Asian Studies (ISAS) at the National University Of Singapore (NUS). Previously I have worked and studied in Singapore, Myanmar, China, Taiwan, and India.
