About Jason Aubin

Over 20 years of courtroom experience as a criminal defense attorney, specializing in representation of higher level felony crimes and homicide, practicing in 22 different counties as well as the Middle and Western Federal Districts of NC. Over 15 years of undergraduate and graduate level teaching experience as a law professor, on subjects including Criminal Law and Procedure, Trial Advocacy, Plea Bargaining, Legal Research and Writing, and Interviewing, Counseling, and Negotiation. Taken dozens of cases to trial by jury, including the first trial to reach a verdict in Charlotte in over a year due to the pandemic, resulting in a not guilty verdict. Trained attorneys of all experience levels at various conferences at the UNC School of Government, including the Defender Trial School and Habitual Felon Law training at the Higher Level Felony Defender Conference. Advocate for the mentally ill, featured on an award winning NPR podcast describing the challenges that incapable clients face in the criminal justice system. Current Adjunct Faculty in the Trial Advocacy Program at the University of Illinois College of Law, where our program has become the best in Illinois and one of the strongest in the country.
