Losing my health insurance while my wife was pregnant changed my life. My wife was 4 months pregnant with our third child when we got a letter from our insurance company letting us know they were canceling our plan. To make things worse, our two older boys both ended up in the N-ICU when they were born. At that time I was working in the not-for-profit sector and to say we weren’t making a lot of money would be an understatement. The only “saving grace” was a new insurance program - Obamacare. Not having any other choices, we called the 800 number to sign up. From that first call, it was one problem after another. No one knew how it all worked, it really wasn’t their fault. There weren’t any systems or processes in place. They were literally building this airplane in the air. From leaving our kids off the insurance to adding them on twice, at one point they had my wife was on 4 different insurance plans, and I wasn’t sure if any of them were going to pay for this baby. It took me nearly 400 hours that year to get my family’s health insurance straightened out. The good news is, my wife delivered a healthy baby girl without complication. seniors turn 65 every day in the United States. Most of them have always had an employer or HR person to guide their health insurance decisions. The constant barrage of phone calls, television ads, and mail pieces leaves many of them utterly confused as to what choices to make. Through my personal experiences, I can empathize with the confusion seniors face, the uncertainty they feel, and the helplessness of not knowing who to trust.
