About Jason Maher

My resume says counselor. But when you get right down to it, I’m much more—I’m an educator, a teacher, a workshop and seminar presenter, a community liaison, a student-success coordinator, and a technical geek (ask me anything about data, Microsoft Excel, or credit tracking software systems, seriously). I’m also a big believer in the mission of California’s community colleges. I believe that students don’t neatly fit into molds handed to them. Students don’t make decisions about their futures based on boxes they can check off. They make decisions based on their experiences. I believe that students make the best decisions when they’re moved, when they’re engaged to the point that they drop whatever it is they have planned and say, “Oh, heck yes. I want to do THAT.” And so, through empathic and culturally competent counseling, I help students discover how their skills connect to futures they never thought possible. I teach students how to communicate their experiences in ways that re-narrate their lives into alignment with their own visions and values. Specialties: college and career counseling with active duty, military affiliated, and veteran populations, first generation students, disproportionately impacted students, historically underserved students, and non-traditional students.
