About Jason Oconnell

When I was 22, I was solo-backpacking the West Coast Trail when I fell and broke my left hand, effectively ending my chances at a career performing the viola. Taking a cue from the outdoors, I adapted and changed course, pursuing instead a career in audio engineering, a hobby I had always tinkered with on the side. After a hard-won master’s degree and many music festivals and internships, cosmic irony gifted me the opportunity to be the Director of Recording Services at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music (SFCM), where I had originally been accepted to complete a master’s degree in viola performance. At SFCM I work closely with students, faculty, facilities and IT staff, and school leadership to make sure that the institution’s audiovisual, archival, hospitality, and marketing needs are met. I enjoy being backstage, behind the camera, and in the editing booth to make sure we are capturing memorable experiences and achieving the vision and mission of our school.
