Background

About Javier Cano

BSc in Geography and MSc in Geographic Information Technologies. Over 10 years’ experience in forest monitoring and 7 years’ experience in REDD+ carbon accounting and MRV. I led the MRV team during the REDD+ readiness phase in Chile, including the elaboration of the FREL/FRL, MRV system and REDD+ Annex of results. I have participated in the Technical Assessments of REDD+ Reference Level, on the FCPF TAP to review the ER-PD in the Dominican Republic and Guatemala and is part of the GCF ITAP. During my work experience in CONAF in Chile (2015-2018), I integrated the core group in charge of the FCPF Carbon Fund, participating in the ER-PD and ER-Package elaboration as well as during the TAP evaluation. In parallel, I also participated in the implementation of the UN-REDD National Programme, linked to the NFMS design and implementation and, since 2018, I oversaw the UN-REDD programme from his positions in FAO. In addition, in 2019, I participated in Guatemala´s and the Dominican Republic ER-PD TAP. I led the design and implementation of the NFMS for REDD+ in Chile, including planning and implementation of different mobilized resources from FCPF, UN-REDD, GEF, COSUDE, IADB, among others, to develop the studies, activities, technologies systems and capacity building activities, to improve the country capacity to report REDD+ reports, based on existing information a systems, such as the Land Use Change Mapping System and the National Forest Inventory, and also establishing the foundations to set formal institutional arrangements to achieve the sustainability in the NFMS for REDD+.
