Jay Barnes, FAIA, is the founding principal of Barnes Gromatzky Kosarek Architects. Founded in 1985, the firm is committed to a general practice, serving both public and private sectors. Today, with partners Carl Gromatzky and Thomas Kosarek, the firm is recognized as leaders in educational design and campus planning having completed major campus projects for such universities as The University of Texas at Austin, Texas A&M University, The University of Texas at San Antonio, The University of Texas at El Paso, Texas Tech University and Texas State University. Known for an engaging and collaborative process, the firm creates architecture in support of the delivery of education and student success. Their research for such universities as The University of Texas at Austin focuses on how architecture can impact student success, graduation rates and the quality of the student experience. Their work with Austin Community College explores new paradigms for delivering developmental math education and rethinking the traditional campus. The firm has been honored with awards for excellence, for their work in education from organizations including the American Institute of Architects, the Texas Society of Architects, the Urban Land Institute, Congress for the New Urbanism, and World Architecture News. Jay is a frequent speaker at industry and community conferences and forums and has distinguished himself as a leader in architecture for education at local, regional and national conferences. He has presented at the American Institute of Architects Annual Convention, the Texas Society of Architects Annual Convention, the Society of College and University Planning Conferences (SCUP), and the Texas College and University Facilities Conference (TCUF) as well as community forums and events.
