About Jay Burling

My passion for engineering started as a child when I bought my first downhill skateboard. In the relentless search for speed, I upgraded the cheap ABEC 3 bearings to ceramic ABEC 7. I went so fast down the next hill that I got speed wobbles and crashed. Mission accomplished… sort of. I fixed the speed wobbles by installing stiffer bushings and my first engineering project was complete. I rode that skateboard down the hills of St Lucia, where I studied Mechanical Engineering at UQ, supplementing my practical engineering skills with problem solving acumen. Today I’m still doing what I love: technical problem solving combined with hands-on engineering. Working with Aurizon affords me the luxury of getting out of the office and working hands on with our assets. My skateboard doesn’t get much use anymore, nowadays I’m upgrading and maintaining my 4WD and motorbike, ready for the next adventure.
