About Jay Carlin

I am a music educator currently based in Tokyo, Japan. I have taught students from 3 years old through High School in classes such as Wind Band, String Orchestra, Modern / Rock Band, Music Recording Technology, Songwriting, Musical Theater, and Choir. I am also an adjunct instructor at Troy University, teaching Advanced Music Tech for the Graduate Music Education program. Previous appointments include International School of the Sacred Heart in Tokyo, TASIS Portugal in Lisbon, Berkeley International School in Bangkok, and Thai-Chinese International School (TCIS) in Bangkok. A core tenet of my philosophy of music education is that all students can enjoy and benefit from music study, and as such, all students should have access to personally relevant and culturally sensitive music-making experiences, regardless of previous experience, current ability, or future intention. I strive to challenge student learners to connect music to other subject areas and to their own personal growth, inspiring them to make music, creativity, and personal expression a fundamental component of who they are. Most of all, I make the music classroom a fun, safe, and welcoming place for students of all abilities and interests, evidenced by the fact that enrollment in elective music courses has increased dramatically at every school where I have been employed.
