Background
About Jay Gentry
I am a PhD candidate in contemporary American literature at the University of North Texas. My research explores the manifestation and spread of white supremacy within the post-apocalyptic genre. My dissertation examines the cultural shift from 1965 to 2015 and how we reconcile fears of destruction with inherent biases. My teaching portfolio includes a diverse class listing. I teach in Technical Communication as well as the English Department. My student evaluations have averaged a 4.8/5, and I pride myself on offering the best undergraduate experience possible to students. Within the Technical Communication Department, I have taught entry level and advanced courses that help students develop professional writing skills. My experiences in these courses has helped me develop new and dynamic lessons to bring into my college writing courses. Within the English Department, I have taught entry level and advanced courses focusing on American literature. Genre studies and survey courses allow students to experience a broad sampling of writing, which can help them determine which period they are truly interested in. I focus my advanced literature courses around giving students a new experience from voices they may have not heard before. Ethnic Literature is one of my favorite classes to teach because it allows students to see into a new aspect of American life. I have presented independent research at regional, national, and international conferences. Conferencing and exploring new ideas have always interested me. Sharing and developing research has always been important to me.
