About Jay Hores

Advocating for people who are members of marginalized communities, finding ways to improve their mental and physical health, and helping them reach their full potential is my passion! I strongly believe in the resilience and strength of marginalized communities and am dedicated to dismantling systemic oppression. My greatest strength is my empathy. I have a unique ability to understand the mindsets and experiences of people from various backgrounds and help them feel heard. I communicate in a very compassionate and nonjudgmental manner and have excellent active listening, motivational interviewing, and advocacy skills. As a Care Management Coordinator at the Northwell Health LGBTQ Transgender Program, I have gained valuable experience in advocacy, motivational interviewing, supportive counseling, risk assessment and prevention, professional writing, and community outreach. I am currently a Master of Social Work student at Stony Brook University and through my field placements I have facilitated educational presentations to adolescents, children, parents, and professionals about various topics such as interpersonal violence prevention, mental health, resilience, substance use, family communication, and mindfulness. I have also dedicated numerous hours of my own time to learning about the symptoms and treatments of mental health, trauma, and substance use disorders and am always working to increase my knowledge of these subjects. Some of my interests include psychopathology after trauma and how to promote resilience, the ways in which socioeconomic status influences mental health and behavior, and the etiology of mood disorders. I plan to become a clinical social worker in the future for survivors of trauma and help make mental healthcare more accessible for members of marginalized communities. I am an out-of-the-box, analytical, and detail-oriented thinker who develops creative and practical ideas and solutions.
